Declassified documents indicate Israel and South Africa conducted nuclear test in 1979

Declaring that Israel conducted a nuclear experiment only six months after the signing of the Camp David Accords—considered a significant achievement of the Carter administration—would leave the United States with no choice but to impose sanctions on the State of Israel. The panel therefore reached the conclusions that were more convenient to all involved. A classified memo by a senior official at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) from June 1980 dubbed that the White House panel’s report a "whitewash, due to political considerations," and argued the flash was the result of a nuclear test. A decade later, Wolfgang Panofsky, one of the most respected physicists on the panel, said in an interview, "We made a 'Scotch Verdict.' There wasn’t enough evidence to decide either way."

У меня есть подозрение, что американцы прекрасно в курсе всех подробностей израильского атомного проекта.
Но информация эта будет выдана на гора только в случае, если отношения между Израилем и США станут ну совсем хреновыми.

Подозрение? Я думаю, это - хорошо установленный факт. Поэтому не понимаю смысла статей, подобных цитированной.

Скорее всего, автор хотел подчеркнуть, что две страны апартеида (ТМ) состыковались в сотрудничестве по ЯО.

Хотя написано аккуратно: специалисты "полагают", "верят",\... даже если эти взрывы были израильско-южноафриканские,
было невыгодно из-за опасения санкций раскрывать секрет...

Другое действительно в голову не приходит.
