I asked. “I don’t know,” he replied. “Nobody spoke to me about this before.” 

И в собеседники выбрал такого же дурачка - генерала. Или придумал его. По своему образцу и подобию.

Ну, он всегда был "интеллектуалом", а значит - полностью оторванным от реалий.

В слове "интеллектуал" присутствует корень "интеллект". Последний просто требует сомневаться в своих убогих знаниях. Если нет сомнений, то это уже не "интеллектуал", а "интеллигент" (вроде кашеобразного русского понятия). А если полностью оторван - то "аустронаут из анттеллихентофф".
